A short time later, Eddie accompanied the ambulance to the hospital. Drusilicus had explained the situation to Eleanor and had headed out before the EMTs arrived, with the claim that he wanted to work on his venom antidote.

It was a short ride to Holy Name Hospital, a huge, sprawling facility with a multi-level parking lot built up on top of a hill near the center of town.

Eddie felt reassured as they went inside, as the logo for the medical center was a stylized cross. He figured if there was one place, other than a church, that might keep vampires away, this was it.

The orderlies wheeled Cerise in. She had regained consciousness after Drusilicus had released his spell. Now Eddie moved into the waiting room, unsure what he should do.

He found a place to sit, picked up a magazine, and opened it. He saw nothing on the page as questions kept running around his mind.

He was considering the idea of a vampire using the stolen Native American mask. It could explain why the vampire, Strix, got staked in the Springbanks Arch; it could’ve been someone he thought he knew. Daniel sent the team into a trap but swore the information came from a trusted source. Could that have been the shapeshifting vampire? Lysandra mentioned she was led into a trap by a trusted friend. Again, this suggested a shapeshifter. And finally, Momma saw someone she was sure was Eddie and invited him in, which gave the vampire the opportunity to attack Cerise.

His head was beginning to swim from all of these assumptions. He couldn’t quite figure out what any of it had to do with Mordred. Was Mordred using the mask? He could have been in New York since all of this began, sending the wizards in the wrong directions.

Eddie heard a small voice repeating his name. He reached into his pocket to extract the small round mirror he kept on him at all times, which got strange looks from the other people in the waiting room.

Marlowe’s face was in the mirror and he called out, “Eddie Berman,” over and over.

Eddie stood and noticed the stares. “New kind of phone,” he said in way of explanation. “Really small.”

The nurse behind the desk cleared her throat loudly. “No cell phones in the waiting room.”

Eddie nodded and headed outside through the glass doors nearby. He made sure no one was close, then waved his hand over the mirror, and using his will, he reached out to his mentor.

“Eddie! By Zoroaster, I was worried. Drusilicus just told me about your wife. Will she be all right?”

“I dunno, they’re running tests on her right now,” Eddie conceded. “Did Drusilicus tell you that another me showed up last night?”

“Yes, and that would explain how the vampire gained entrance. Do you think the attack was after you got home?”

Eddie shook his head. “I don’t know. I fell asleep in the chair downstairs, spent the night there.”

“Then I must point out another theory. Perhaps the vampire was attempting to attack you, Eddie.
